SONGWRITING

Trust

By: Laura Alford

I want
To trust you
Really, I do
But after
All the bullshit
I’ve been through
Trust is earned
Not given
I ain’t no fool.

Don’t ask
Don’t tell
Don’t want
Your answer
I learned about lies
Under the boot
Of the master
Avoiding truth
Is relationship cancer
But better
A slow death
Than a
Train wreck disaster.

Try to keep
My crazy
behind locked door
But this feeling
I’ve got
is hard to ignore
The ghost
Of past lovers
Always takes more
The sting
Of betrayal
A knife
In my core.

I want
To trust you
really I do
But after
All the bullshit
I’ve been through
Trust is earned
Not given,
I ain’t no fool.

Don’t ask
Don’t tell,
Don’t want your answer
I learned about lies
Under the boot
Of the master
Don’t ask
Don’t tell,
Don’t want
Your answer
Once you start
Downhill
You only
go faster

I’ve got moats
And walls
And loaded
Cannons
The better
To endure
Emotional famine
Plenty of landmines
Scattered at random
My worst fears rampage
With wild abandon

I open
The drawbridge and
Welcome you in
Stranger danger
Alarms
kick you out
Again
Makes me question
Where you’ve been
Wonder who besides me
Touches your skin

The fear
Sets in and
I get real mean
Relationship skills of
a hormonal tween
I take
All the quizzes
In pop magazines
Then gnaw off my arm
like a trapped
Wolverine

I want
To trust you,
Really, I do
But after
All the bullshit
I’ve been through
Trust is earned
Not given,
I ain’t no fool.

Don’t ask
Don’t tell,
Don’t want
Your answer
I learned about lies
Under the boot
Of the master
Don’t ask
Don’t tell,
Don’t want
Your answer
My heart’s brittle
Easy to shatter

Don’t ask
Don’t tell,
Don’t want
Your answer
I learned about lies
Under the boot
Of the master
Don’t ask
Don’t tell,
Don’t want
Your answer
I learned about lies
Under the boot
Of the master
